"Christmas Bird Count" for Families
Every December across the nation birds of skill levels get together at local parks and nature areas from sun up to sun down to look for wintering birds. Why would these people get up early on a weekend and spend all day out in often very cold, wet, snowy weather looking for birds? Getting a count of local wintering birds helps scientists gather population information for future conservation of habitat.
Families can get a chance to experience the joy of birding together on Sunday morning in December during a modified Christmas Bird Count. All skill levels are welcome to come as well as all ages. Come dressed to be outside for more than an hour looking for birds. Bring binoculars if you have them. There will be a few pairs to borrow that day of the "count".
We will walk the trails of a local suburban park and count the number of birds we see that morning. Bird watching tips and techniques will be discussed. We will watch for bird behaviors and listen for their calls learning a few before the morning is over. This is a great program for anyone with an interest in birds!
